The triggering event that prompted this post was my Impreza receiving two new front tires yesterday. The spout (where you pump the air into the tire) was audibly whistling and leaking air on the passenger side, the tire pressure sensor was on, so I brought it to Midas, and cha-ching! $$$ Cha-ching for them, not me. It’s fixed and I have peace of mind since I am driving to Lancaster county next week with the kids. I do NOT want to have a flat tire that far from home.

$$ We took out some dead trees in the back yard – safety issue resolved

$$ We were putting exactly half of my take home pay each paycheck into our portfolio and we (I) missed it greatly 😉 After crunching some numbers we decided that we will do it once, and not twice a month.

$$ Before/after care programs for both kids are $600 per month

$$ Gymnastics for both, piano for L, jiu jitsu for R and now skate lessons for R… I don’t have an exact total number but gymnastics just hit last Friday and it was $488 for two kids for two months. Piano lessons were $600 for the semester (Sept to January), Brazilian jiu jitsu was $350 for 10 lessons, and skating was an early bird deal of 9 lessons for $115. That one was a steal, happy I got it.

$$ Wants. We have some performances coming up at local theaters, and I want to look good. I want a green velvet dress and golden shoes for our theater visits (two in November, one in December). I also want a fair isle sweater and faux leather pants. I also want a Bernardo long beige winter coat. Want, want, want. Ugh.

$$ Lancaster, PA trip next week! The farm stay has been paid already but, you know, spending money, meals, local markets, a train museum, Strasbourg railroad (also already paid).

$$ L’s birthday is at her gymnastics place and that will probably cost about $250. Plus pizza, drinks, and party favors. Let’s not forget tipping the staff. I wanted to have it at the house but, she is almost seven, and is stubborn.

$$ Teacher’s gifts! L has 5 teachers (two classroom teachers, and 4 specials), plus three after care teachers. R has two classroom teachers that also serve students in after care. R’s whole preschool staff is amazing (family workers, aids, reception, etc) so I am thinking of getting them all a nice big tray of Cheryl’s cookies ($100 right there).

$$ Christmas is coming. T and I agreed to NOT get each other gifts. Instead, we will get new furniture for the living room (current couches are from 2014 and have been through a lot – cats, kids, spills, breastfeeding, etc). I know I do not want to over shop for the kids- they have a ton already. If it were up to me, I would just get them one gift each but I am married to T whose childhood memories were marking many things in Sears catalogue.

So, that was helpful to lay it all out. Money woes, anyone?..

Everything seems to be getting more and more expensive, even just buying groceries is shocking. We’ve really toned-down on Christmas presents over the past few years, and it’s been very nice financially and mentally.

I feel like when it rains, it pours, and Nov/Dec are often heavy spending months! I am not doing it this year, but there have been years where I have had to go to half a dozen holiday parties, and even if there are free drinks, there is still an outfit and transportation and maybe a gift or dinner before or whatever. It adds up! My friends and I used to do a running “party” where we would all meet at a trailhead, do a run, then have a breakfast potluck (with Champagne!) afterward and that was a great way to get to spend time with each other without breaking the bank. Also a few years ago, I told everyone that I would rather buy them an experience than a thing, and vice versa. I would rather go out for dinner with friends than get a physical gift; it keeps the clutter down and makes great memories. I think your PA trip is a gift like that, and maybe you can get the kids a few things from a thrift store or something(?)

I struggled so hard yesterday to comment, hopefully this will work.

It’s always something with money, right? We just had to buy a washer and dryer. That was really expensive. And a month or so ago we took the car in for an oil change and came out with new tires and another repair we were NOT expecting.

All of those childhood experiences are expensive, right?

It seems to be a money Monday on the blogosphere…

I hate spending money. But you are at least putting lots of stuff into fun memories, trips and education. Investing in ne self is always a great investment.

Tires… not so much. We had to do that last Tuesday. We wanted to go to work and after 10 m the husband got out of the car saying something is wrong… flat tire. Wonderful. 300€ down the drain for a car we are giving back in 6 months. Sigh…

Adulting is no fun at times.

I am getting my winter tires put on in two days, we have rims in at a shop getting fixed right now. Cars (and houses) are money sinks.

Everything IS more expensive. Like…so much more expensive. I was at my parents’ home last week and my father has a giant pile of crushed gravel for his driveway. In 2000, it was $100 for a load. Now it’s $400!!! Inflation is crazy.

You have such a wonderful sense of style, so I can’t wait to see you in a green velvet dress! I know it will be stunning.

The money I most hate spending right now is the orthodontist. We don’t have private dental coverage so it’s all out of pocket and it’s about $7,000. Yikes. I sure hope she appreciates her smile. It cost us the value of a used car.

Those lessons and before / after care sure do add up, right? We are going through financial and estate planning next year so the Mr and I have been trying to get a better handle on where our money goes, which has been oof but also good for us to be better communicators about. PS: I can’t wait to hear about Lancaster – I have always wanted to go!

Life is expensive. I don’t know how most people manage to live AND put money away for retirement and rainy days. And then mostly, all these unforeseen costs pile up in the same month. Oof. You’re lucky if you have sinking funds for all the these things…

I hear you, Daria! We had to put two new tires on plus a major service and it was over $1000. We pay $250 per week in childcare fees for O, and health insurance is the other bigger item. Our kids don’t do too many extracurricular activities but Scouts is a few hundred per year, plus swimming lessons is usually $200 or so for 10 lessons. The good thing is in Australia retirement saving is mandatory (workplaces pay it separately) so 17% of my income goes to that – if it was mandatory I’m sure it wouldn’t be that much!

Our finances are much better since the kids have left school and are financially independent, but I remember those days and the start of term when we were paying for school, and extra-curriculas.

I just spent more than a month’s worth of pay on a procedure for my cat that I’m pretty sure didn’t work. I would like to curl up under my desk and sleep until 2029.

Money woes! I’m always shocked when I learn how much money it costs to have children – between aftercare, sports, extracurriculars, and then just the day to day stuff! How do people do it?! It’s too much.
